When I read this when I was younger, I thought yes, I need to be nice to mean people because God is.

But as an adult and truly seeing myself through the light of the holiness of God, and my human nature, I realized Jesus is telling us, that our human nature, the sinful nature that was given to us at Eden through Adam and Eve’s disobedience, made humans ingest the poison of sin.
Thereby it made our hearts— toward God and His ways— ungrateful and wicked.

That is why Jesus tells us two lines later, not to judge others, because we all, everyone, every last one of us, have needed Jesus to save us from our sinful nature, that sinful heart given back at Eden.

That no matter who we are or where we started, we are all in the same boat, same needs, from God, needing a perfect savior to fulfill the law for us, and pay our penalties, so we could receive our new eternal, spotless hearts and nature, Jesus’s.

May we know that we know that we know, Jesus saves all of us from the fallen nature and gives anyone and everyone, a new pure spotless heart of immortal purity that makes us grateful to God again and good in God’s eyes, anyone who believes in Him.
